Temporary Garden—Ongoing Maintenance is an ever-evolving rock garden installed at 120 Folsom St. and tended to daily by the artist Vanha Lam.
This site documents the process of planning, building, and maintaining the rock garden.
The installation, a 527 square foot rock garden, expands on the theme of transformation present across Vanha’s body of work. The field of stone suggests construction debris of past infrastructure, including the now-dismantled Embarcadero Freeway.
This project is a continued investigation into the nature of unfolding, a process whereby materials, space, light and gesture alter the work over time. A meditative aspect exists in the ritual practice of labor by Vanha who visits the garden daily to maintain the grounds.
This project is a community effort and acknowledges the generosity of its donors.
